I can't add a BBM contact with 8703e phone to my Z10

I can send the request to this old phone and they can accept it but my Z10 doesn't acknowledge the acceptance. It comes to the phone as an email but the contact doesn't add to my bbm contacts. Any suggestions - other than getting the other person to get a new phone?
***I don't see it as an email... it is a notification in HUB.
