Z10 battery drains within 6 hours - possible causes

Hi everyone,

This is my first post here, although I've visited the site many times during the years!

Just over 3 weeks ago I finally got the new BlackBerry Z10. I'm impressed with the phone, it's awesome. It's been updated to the latest 10.1.something update, and I've had little or no trouble with it. The battery lasts 2 days normal use with me, which is usually surfing the internet for a few minutes per day, using BBM but not all that much, and phone calls.

However, just 2 days ago after having my phone on charge all night, the battery was completely flat by 3pm (it had been off charge since 9am). I hadn't used the phone really, took a few photos and went on to the BBC website. That was it, but the battery had drained. I initially thought the charger was broken so I put it back on charge with another charger.

Yesterday though, after having the phone on charge since about 8pm the following night and using it minimally (just BBM'ing the girlfriend - she'd get annoyed if I ignored her) the phone was flat by 2pm! I kept an eye on it this time throughout the day, and it had no apps running at all but was very warm. So, to me, there was something in the background making it work very hard. A quick search on the internet revealed a few people have this same issue, but no one seems to know whats causing it. A reload of the software was suggested, which I duly performed. I kept an eye on the phone yesterday evening but the phone is still running hot and the battery just drains.

Now, playing about with it I determined that it is a software issue. As no apps were running, I determined it must be something to do with how the phone uses the radio. Today I have turned off NFC (never use it anyway), and the GPS. I've also turned off data services when using the mobile network, and I've also set the phone to use 3G not 4G. I haven't turned off WiFi, as I'll be in the office all day and then I'm at home.

So far, the battery has drained just only by a smidge. This time yesterday it had depleted by a third. So turning all of that stuff off has returned the phone to it's previous power consumption state.

Tomorrow I will turn the data services back on, and gradually switch these systems back on and see what causes the previous issues that have chewed up the battery. I thought, as there seems to be no active discussion on this topic on the internet, that I'd start it.

Thank you for having me!
