z10 without a data plan.. does it work

i can get the z10 on a pretty good deal sim free, so thinking of picking it up

if i get one for my mom she doesnt have a data plan because shes on wifi 20 hours of the day
does bbm and all that work on just wifi
because i know before you had to have a blackberry dataplan but now it doesnt matter right? or does it still need that connection
