3g and 4g

I am in the UK currently owning the. Stl100-2 with 10.1 and I am wondering two things. Why do I mostly not have 3g on o2 UK mainly it just says H or G why doesn't 3g work all the time? Also when o2 finally gets 4g does my phone instantly get 4g as it's 4g ready
